How Black Friday Works in Korea in 2026 and What Foreigners Can Actually Buy
Oct 7, 2026
If you wait for the fourth Friday of November to start shopping in Korea, you will have missed most of it. Korean retailers run their biggest sales in the first three weeks of the month, and by November 27 the best stock is gone.
Last updated: October 6, 2026 (KST)
Here is the short version. Korea's government-backed sale, renamed K-Sale Festa this year, runs from Thursday, October 29 to Sunday, November 15, 2026. Olive Young, Musinsa and Coupang each run their own "Black Friday" inside that window, with Black Friday proper on November 27 mostly serving as a second push. If you want to import something from the US instead, the duty-free limit is USD 200 for US express shipments and USD 150 for everything else, and from this year your personal customs code expires after twelve months. Below is how to decide what to buy in Korea and what to bring in from abroad.
Korea's Black Friday Calendar for 2026
K-Sale Festa, October 29 to November 15. This is the former Korea Sale Festa (코리아세일페스타), the autumn sale organized with government backing to prop up domestic demand. The 2026 notice names foreign residents as a target audience alongside Korean shoppers and tourists, so the deals are meant for you too. Categories are food, fashion, beauty, cars and home appliances.
The big retailers do not wait for the festa calendar. These are their 2025 windows, which is the best guide to 2026 until they announce:
- Olive Young ran its Black Friday from November 1 to 7, 2025, with 776 brands, about 6,589 items and discounts up to 60%. A pre-sale app coupon (3,000 KRW, about $2, off 30,000 KRW) opened on October 29. It then ran a second, smaller push on November 28 to December 1.
- Musinsa ran "Mujinjang Black Friday" (무진장 블프) from 7 pm on November 16 to midnight on November 26, 2025, about 4,500 brands and 600,000 items at up to 80% off. It sold 368.5 billion KRW (about $263 million) online in those 11 days.
- Coupang ran a Rocket Direct Purchase sale (로켓직구 세일) up to November 11, 2025 with about 850 overseas brands, then a members-only sale on November 28 to December 1.
- 11st (11번가) ran its Amazon Global Store Black Friday from November 20 to December 1, 2025, with up to 61% off on 1.4 million imported items plus Amazon US stock.
- AliExpress Korea ran Singles' Day (광군제, the Chinese 11.11 sale) from November 11 to 19, 2025, with daily time deals at a flat 11,111 KRW (about $8).
So the practical sequence is beauty in the first week, fashion in the third week, and electronics and imports in the last week of November.
💡 TIP: Popular items restock two to three days after a sale opens. Shopping on the Monday to Wednesday after launch beats fighting for stock on opening night.
What to Buy in Korea and What to Import
The rule of thumb: buy anything that is made or heavily sold in Korea from a Korean retailer, and import only things that are cheaper abroad by more than the shipping and tax.
Buy in Korea:
- Korean skincare and makeup. Olive Young's sale is where Korean shoppers stock up for the year, and the app-only bundles are not sold anywhere else.
- Winter clothing. Musinsa carries the domestic brands you see on the street, and padded jackets, UGG-style slippers and sneakers were the top sellers on day one in 2025.
- Appliances and household goods. Next-morning delivery and easy returns beat any overseas discount on a heater.
- Phones and laptops. Smartphones and laptops carry 0% duty, but you still pay 10% VAT when importing over the limit and you lose the Korean warranty. The gap rarely justifies it.
Import from abroad:
- US brands not sold here or priced high here. Running shoes, outdoor gear and some supplements are the classic categories, as long as each order stays under the limit.
- Things only on Amazon. 11st's Amazon Global Store sells them in won and ships them for you, so you skip the forwarding step entirely.

The Customs Rules That Decide Whether Importing Is Worth It
Korea calls personal importing jikgu (직구, "direct purchase"). The rules are simple until you cross a line.
The duty-free limits. An order of USD 150 or less clears without duty or VAT. For goods shipped from the US by express courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS), the limit is USD 200 under the Korea-US free trade agreement. The limit covers the goods price, not shipping. Supplements, medicines, food, alcohol and functional cosmetics never get the USD 200 limit and must go through a full import declaration, so they are limited to USD 150 from anywhere.
Go over by one dollar and the whole order is taxed. Duty is not charged on the excess but on the entire value including international shipping. A USD 250 clothing order from the US pays 13% duty plus 10% VAT, roughly 88,000 KRW (about $63). Rates in 2026: clothing and shoes 13%, bags, watches, cosmetics, earphones and cameras 8%, phones and laptops 0%, with 10% VAT on top of all of them.
Split orders can be combined. If you buy two items from the same seller on the same day and they arrive as separate parcels, customs adds them together. Two USD 80 orders from one shop become a USD 160 order and lose the exemption. Buying on different days, or from different sellers, is not combined even if the boxes arrive together.
Your personal customs code now expires. The gaein tonggwan goyu buho (개인통관고유부호, personal customs clearance code, or PCCC) is the 13-character code starting with P that every import needs, and foreigners get it with their foreign registration number instead of a Korean ID. From 2026 it is valid for one year. A code issued before 2026 expires on your birthday in 2027, and you have 30 days either side of the expiry date to renew before it is cancelled. Check it at unipass.customs.go.kr before you order, and make sure the recipient name on the order matches the name on the code. Not registered yet? Our ARC guide covers the card you need first.
💡 TIP: The Korea Customs Service has an estimated-duty calculator (해외직구물품 예상세액 조회) on its site. Run the order through it before you pay, with shipping included.
Returns, Warranties and Paying as a Foreigner
Returns are the weak point of importing. Refused cancellations and returns are the most common direct-purchase complaint, about 40% of cases, and some sellers add return shipping on top. A "global warranty" does not mean free repairs in Korea; service depends on whether that exact model launched here and whether the brand transfers warranties. Parallel-import goods usually cannot be registered for Korean warranty at all. Coupang's Rocket Wow membership (about 7,890 KRW, around $5.60 a month) gives 30-day returns even on opened, undamaged items, which is the opposite experience.
Paying. Coupang needs a Korean phone number to register and works with foreign Visa and Mastercard in most cases, though a Korean card is the reliable option and the app's address fields behave better in Korean. If you are still on a foreign card, our Korean bank account guide explains how to get a local one. For imports, the real price is goods plus US sales tax, both legs of shipping, duty, VAT and your card's foreign transaction fee.
After Black Friday. The foreigner-focused Korea Grand Sale, run by the tourism ministry, ran December 17, 2025 to February 22, 2026 with about 1,750 companies and up to 15% cashback through partner payment apps. The next dates were not announced as of this writing, but expect a similar winter window.

Koreans have a word for the whole month: bulpeu (블프), the clipped Korean nickname for Black Friday, and it covers Olive Young in week one as much as Amazon in week four. Learn that calendar once and November in Korea stops being a deadline you keep missing and becomes a month you plan around.
